Galicia’s Director of Tourism, Xosé Merelles, today presented the Galicia Calidade certification mark to the Pontevedra-based company Vía Atlántica. At the event, where he was accompanied by the managing director of the quality mark, Ana Méndez, and also by the regional government’s representative in Pontevedra, Agustín Reguera, the contract with the O Rosal winery was signed and a tour of its facilities was conducted.

Vía Atlántica is a winery dating back to 1980, when the first vines were planted. It was in 2020 that the Méndez Rojo family arrived, providing the decisive impetus to revive the legacy. The Méndez Rojo family owns wineries in the Ribeira Sacra, with Vía Romana, and in Valdeorras, with Terriña, both of which are also certified by Galicia Calidade. With this addition, the quality label now has 25 certified wineries across Galicia, 12 of them in the Rías Baixas Designation of Origin.

Xosé Merelles thanked the winery for the trust placed in the Galicia Calidade seal, a “benchmark brand of recognised prestige at a national level, both in the gastronomic and wine sectors as well as in the tourism sector. “We are convinced,” he added, “that this certification will help Vía Atlántica to better position its wines both nationally and in international markets, in a highly volatile socio-economic context and amidst difficulties for the Galician wine sector.”

155 certified companies
As of today, Vía Atlántica’s wines are certified by the quality mark, specifically for its brands Mar del Norte, Cien Rosas, Carta Marina Atlántica, Donaluci, Terramundi and Abilleira, all under the Rías Baixas designation of origin. Since 2020, with the arrival of the current owners, the original vineyards have been restored using traditional methods such as trellising and terraces. The result is a winery that honours its past and looks to the future with the conviction of producing multi-varietal Albariños from O Rosal that reflect the identity of this region.

With this addition, the quality label now has a total of 155 certified companies from all sectors of the Galician economy, with tourism and gastronomy accounting for over 60% of the total.
