The President of the Galician Government, Alfonso Rueda, today highlighted the meat sector as one of the engines of the economy, especially in rural areas, and reaffirmed the commitment of the Xunta to consolidate the community as a benchmark for this industry through a revitalisation strategy of its own.
In this regard, and in a visit to the facilities of the company Torre de Núñez in which he was accompanied by the Regional Minister for Rural Affairs, José González, and the manager of Galicia Quality, ana Méndez, Rueda said that the objective is to position Galicia as a key region in the production of meat, with a high level of competitiveness and in a sustainable manner.
For this reason, as he pointed out, the Galician Government will carry out a series of measures until 2030 to help both livestock farmers and industries to improve competitiveness; to be more sustainable from an environmental, social and economic point of view; and to promote greater internationalisation.
In this regard, the head of the Xunta assured that the meat sector is a strategic sector as it accounts for 34% of the value of the final agricultural production and generates almost 6,000 jobs. He stressed that Galicia is synonymous with quality meat products thanks to the work and daily effort that is made in the more than 43,000 farms and 190 processing industries that exist in the community.
In this respect, he thanked all of them for their work and congratulated Torre de Núñez, a company that has the Galicia Quality seal for its products, for its commitment to growth a decade after the installation of the new ham dryer that contributed to the growth of this company. A commitment that is currently increasing with the innovations and improvements that the company from Lugo has just incorporated into its plant in O Corgo.
Alfonso Rueda cited the company as an example of the Galician meat sector's commitment to innovation, evolution and internationalisation, as well as its commitment to the region, even though it is already present in 25 countries. A success, he assured, marked by the adaptation to the new times without losing its origins.
